How it works with Shopify
On this page
Shopify stores get the same kinds of questions every day: does this come in another size, how long does shipping take to my country, can I return it, do you sell wholesale. ASDK puts AI agents on your storefront that answer those questions from your own product pages and policies, and make your catalog easier for AI assistants to describe. Today you add it with one script tag in your theme. A Shopify app that does the same without code is coming soon.
What ASDK adds to a Shopify store
ASDK builds one knowledge baseA knowledge base is the curated set of content an AI agent is allowed to answer from, such as web pages, help articles, PDFs and FAQs, kept indexed and current. from your store's public pages, such as products, collections, shipping and returns policies and your FAQ, plus any documents you upload, like size charts or wholesale terms. Every agent answers from it.
- Chat (early access, from the Free plan) answers shoppers' questions about products, shipping and returns from your pages, links the page each answer came from, and offers to take contact details when it cannot help.
- Agent-Ready (early access, from the Free plan) publishes what your knowledge base knows in formats AI assistants read well, so a shopper who asks an assistant about your products gets an answer based on your own pages.
- Sales (early access, from the Pro plan) fits stores that also sell to businesses: it asks your qualifying questions about volumes and terms and offers a call to buyers who fit.
- Search is coming soon. It will answer in place of the store's search box, with links to the products and pages it used.
The agents answer from what your store publishes. They cannot look up orders, change a cart or see customer accounts, and they say so when asked.
An example from a storefront
Imagine a store that sells ceramic cookware. A shopper on a product page asks: "Is this pan oven-safe, and how long does shipping to Canada take?"
Chat finds the passage in the product description that gives the maximum oven temperature and the passage in the shipping policy that lists delivery times for Canada. It answers both parts in two short sentences and links the product page and the shipping policy, so the shopper can check.
If the shipping policy says nothing about Canada, Chat says it does not know rather than guessing, and offers to pass the question to your team with the shopper's email. That gap is also worth fixing on the policy page itself, because the next shopper will ask the same thing. The glossary explains this kind of groundingGrounding means tying an AI model's answer to specific, verifiable sources, such as your own pages or a search index, so each claim can be checked..
Install today: one line in theme.liquid
Every page of a Shopify storefront is wrapped by your theme's main layout file, theme.liquid. Paste your snippet from the dashboard's Install page there, on the line just above the closing body tag:
<script async src="https://cdn.asdk.com/v1/asdk.js" data-site-id="SITE_ID"></script>
</body>Shopify's help center explains how to edit theme code (checked October 2026). Duplicate your theme first, so you can go back to the original.
Open the code editor
In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes, open the … menu next to your current theme and choose Edit code.
Paste the snippet
Open theme.liquid in the Layout folder, find the closing body tag and paste the snippet on the line above it. Click Save.
Check
Open your store, look for the chat button, then click Check installation on the ASDK dashboard. The Shopify install guide covers each step in detail.
The ASDK Shopify app: coming soon
Editing theme.liquid works, but it has two downsides: someone has to edit code, and theme updates can drop the change. The ASDK Shopify app is coming soon and uses Shopify's own mechanism for this, a theme app extension with an app embed block.
According to Shopify's developer documentation, theme app extensions mean merchants don't need to edit theme code, and app embed blocks work in both vintage and Online Store 2.0 themes. Shopify also notes that app embed blocks are turned off after an app is installed until the merchant switches them on under Theme settings → App embeds in the theme editor (both checked October 2026).
So once the app is listed, setup is meant to be: install the app, paste your ASDK site ID into the app embed's settings, switch the embed on and save. Until then, the snippet method above loads exactly the same widget.
What is available and what is coming soon
| Item | Status |
|---|---|
Install by pasting the snippet into theme.liquid | Available |
| ASDK Shopify app with an app embed block | Coming soon |
| Chat, Sales and Agent-Ready agents | Early access |
| Search agent | Coming soon |
| Looking up orders, carts or customer accounts | Not offered |
ASDK as a whole is in early access: the agents work and you can use them, but they may change while we improve them.
Shopify details worth knowing
- Checkout. Checkout pages use their own layout, so the widget does not appear there.
- Theme updates. When you update your theme, Shopify can leave your code changes out of the updated copy. Check the installation again after every update.
- Paid themes you are still trying out. Shopify lets you edit the code of a paid theme only after you buy it.
- Consent banners. If your consent banner holds back scripts until a shopper agrees, the widget loads after consent. It sets no cookies; it keeps a random visitor ID in local storage. See consent managers.
Getting better answers from your store
Shoppers ask about facts that are often scattered across a store. Gather them where an agent can find them:
- Write shipping and returns as text. Delivery times by region, return windows and who pays for returns should be on a policy page, not only in an image or a banner.
- Fill in product descriptions. Materials, dimensions, compatibility and care instructions answer most product questions before anyone has to ask.
- Add an FAQ page. The questions your support inbox sees every week, with short answers, are the easiest passages to cite.
- Upload what is not on the site. Size charts, wholesale terms or spec sheets in PDF can go into the knowledge base as documents.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an ASDK app in the Shopify App Store?
Not yet. The ASDK Shopify app is coming soon. Today you add ASDK by pasting one script tag into your theme's theme.liquid file, which takes a few minutes.
Does the widget appear on the Shopify checkout?
No. Checkout pages use their own layout, so the widget does not appear there. It appears on the storefront pages that use your theme.
What happens to the snippet when I update my theme?
Shopify can drop code changes when you update a theme, so check the installation again after every update. The coming ASDK app avoids this because it does not edit theme code.
Can the agent see orders or customer accounts?
No. ASDK answers from your public pages and the documents you upload. It cannot look up orders, change carts or see customer accounts, and it says so when asked.
