What llms.txt is and how to use it
llms.txt is a proposal from llmstxt.org: a Markdown file at the root of your site that gives language models a short, structured map of it. It starts with your name as an H1 title and a one-line summary in a blockquote, can add a few paragraphs of key facts, and then lists your important pages in H2 sections, each link with an optional note. A section called Optional holds links a tool may skip when it is short on space.
What to put first, and where to publish it
Write it for a reader with little time: lead with the pages that answer the questions people ask about you, such as pricing, product, docs and contact. Use full URLs, plain link text and notes that say what each page answers. When you are done, save the file as llms.txt at the root of your domain, check that it opens in a browser as plain text, and update it when you add or remove important pages.
Next to robots.txt and your sitemap, not instead of them
llms.txt does not replace robots.txt or your sitemap: robots.txt says what crawlers may fetch, the sitemap lists every page, and llms.txt picks the few that matter and explains them. Where do I put llms.txt?
At the root of your domain, so it opens at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt, served as plain text or Markdown. Each subdomain that has its own content needs its own file.
Does llms.txt replace robots.txt or my sitemap?
No. robots.txt controls what crawlers may fetch and the sitemap lists every page. llms.txt is a short, curated summary for AI tools. Keep all three.
Do AI assistants read llms.txt?
Some AI tools and agent frameworks do, but support is not universal and changes often. The file is cheap to maintain, so many sites publish it anyway.
What goes in the Optional section?
Links an AI tool can skip when its context is short: archives, older posts, legal pages, changelogs. Keep the most important pages in the sections above it.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The file is built in your browser. Only if you use Prefill from your sitemap do we receive the website address, to read its public sitemap and page titles.
