What is an AI Overview? Definition for site owners

An AI Overview is a short AI-written summary that Google Search shows with its results, with links to the web pages it drew on.

How it works

On May 14, 2024, Google began rolling out AI Overviews to everyone in the U.S., powered by a Gemini model customized for Search, with more countries to follow (Google). They do not appear on every search: Google says they are "only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search".

To build one, Google may use "query fan-out": "issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources" and then picking a wider set of supporting links. AI Mode, a separate conversational search experience, uses similar techniques for longer, exploratory questions, and the two can show different links (Google Search Central).

The rules for appearing are the ordinary ones. A page "must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet", and Google says you "don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup". Clicks from AI features count toward the Web search type in Search Console's Performance report. To limit what Google shows from a page, the same controls apply as for snippets: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex.

Why it matters for your website

An AI Overview can answer the question before anyone clicks. Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 U.S. adults in March 2025: 18% of their Google searches produced an AI summary. When one appeared, people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% when none appeared, and clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits (Pew). Google's own 2024 announcement said links in AI Overviews get more clicks than the same page as a regular listing. The two measure different things, so treat neither as the full picture.

What you can do:

  • Answer common questions plainly, in text, near the top of the page.
  • Keep facts consistent across pages, so the summary has nothing to contradict.
  • Watch Search Console for queries where impressions rise but clicks fall.

Example

Someone searches "how long does a SOC 2 Type II audit take". An AI Overview gives a short range and lists a few supporting pages. A compliance firm whose page states its own typical timeline in one clear paragraph has a good chance of being one of those links, and the visitors who do click arrive already knowing the basics.
