What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Also known asAEOAnswer optimization
On this page

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can lift a direct, accurate answer to a question from your page.

How it works

"Answer engine" covers any system that replies with an answer rather than a list of links: featured snippets, voice assistants, AI Overviews, chat assistants. AEO is older than generative engine optimization (GEO) and overlaps with it almost completely; marketers use the terms loosely, and so do the platforms. Microsoft's Bing team opens its guidance on AI answers with "Whether you call it GEO, AIO, or SEO, one thing hasn't changed: visibility is everything" (Microsoft).

The core techniques are about form:

  • Question-shaped headings that match how people ask ("How long does setup take?").
  • The answer first. One or two sentences that answer the heading directly, then the detail.
  • Q&A pairs. Microsoft notes that assistants "can often lift these pairs word for word into AI-generated responses."
  • Lists and tables for steps, comparisons and specifications.
  • Visible text. Answers inside images, PDFs or collapsed tabs may be skipped.

What has changed

Two shifts matter for anyone following older AEO advice:

  • FAQ markup no longer earns a rich result in Google. The FAQ rich result stopped appearing in Google Search on May 7, 2026, and the documentation was removed in June 2026 (Google Search updates). FAQ sections are still useful to readers and to AI systems; the special search display is gone.
  • No special markup for AI features. Google says there is no special schema.org structured data needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no additional requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet (Google Search Central).

Why it matters for your website

A clear answer can be shown without a click, which is the trade-off behind zero-click search. For questions where the answer is the whole need ("What is llms.txt?"), being the cited source builds recognition. For questions that lead to a decision ("Which plan includes SSO?"), a precise answer plus a reason to visit, such as a calculator, a comparison table or a trial, turns visibility into visits.

Before:
## Getting started
Our onboarding process has been designed with flexibility in mind, and
timelines can vary depending on a number of factors...

After:
## How long does setup take?
Setup takes two steps: add the tracking snippet to your site, then connect
your billing system. Historical data imports automatically after that.

The rewrite answers in the first sentence, under a heading phrased as the question. If you add a time estimate, use one your support data backs up.
