What is an AI SDR? Definition and examples
On this page
An AI SDR is an AI agent that does the early work of a sales development rep: engaging inbound leads, asking qualifying questions and booking meetings.
How it works
A sales development representative (SDR) handles the top of the sales funnel: responding to new leads, finding out whether they are a fit and passing good ones to an account executive. An AI SDR automates that loop. Qualified, one of the vendors in the category, describes an AI SDR as one that "qualifies leads, sends follow-ups, books meetings" (Qualified).
A typical setup connects four things:
- Knowledge about your product and pricing, so it can answer buyer questions accurately.
- Qualification rules, such as company size, use case, budget or timeline, often based on frameworks used in lead qualificationLead qualification is deciding whether a potential buyer fits your offer and is ready to talk, so sales time goes to the leads most likely to become customers..
- A calendar with routing rules, so qualified leads land on the right rep's schedule.
- A CRM, where the conversation, answers and meeting are logged.
AI SDRs usually work in website chat and email, and some vendors add voice or video. The category has moved into the mainstream of sales software: Salesforce completed its acquisition of Qualified on April 1, 2026 (Salesforce).
Why it matters for your website
The case for an AI SDR is speed and coverage. Inbound buyers arrive at all hours, and a form that promises "we'll get back to you" loses some of them before anyone replies. An agent can answer the visitor's question, qualify them in the same conversation and offer a meeting slot while their interest is high.
The risks are just as concrete:
- Interrogation. Asking five qualifying questions before answering one feels like a gate, not help.
- Wrong answers about pricing, contracts or integrations damage a deal more than slow ones.
- Over-filtering turns away buyers who don't match a rigid rule but would have bought.
Good setups answer first, ask only the questions that change routing, and use human handoffHuman handoff is when an AI agent passes a conversation to a person, with the transcript and key details, because the visitor asked or the AI reached a limit. for anything non-standard. Measure them by meetings held and pipeline created, not by chats started.
Example
A visitor on a pricing page asks: "Do you support SSO on the mid-tier plan?"
- The agent answers from the pricing page and links to it.
- It asks one question that matters for routing: "How many people would use it?" The visitor says about 40.
- That matches the rule for a sales-assisted deal, so the agent offers three meeting times with the rep who covers that segment.
- The visitor books one; the CRM record includes the question asked, the team size and the page they came from.
